Without downloading? Well, you can go to your Control Panel, double-click Display, then click on the Desktop tab. Scroll threw the different backgrounds and pick one or click browse, and choose a picture or whatever for your background.
As to the legality of any of these options, websites that post backgrounds want you to use their images. Most have a mark on them identifying their origin, so there is no copyright violation. The right to use a background that was provide by a software manufacturer is paid for when you purchase the software. 2) take a photo of your favorite object
3) copy that photo into your computer
